Margraten Requiem 2007
MARGRATEN REQUIEM 2007 - MAGNIFICENT!!
A brilliant and magnificent performance: that was the reaction heard from all sides yesterday afternoon after the performance of Verdi’s Requiem by the Limburg Symphony Orchestra at the American Cemetery of Margraten. This was the second time that a ‘Margraten Requiem’ was performed and the number of visitors was even greater than the first time, in spite of the threatening weather. An estimated 3500 visitors were able to find a place.
In his welcoming words, Mayor H. van Beers of Margraten explained the aim of the performance: commemorating the liberation of 1944 in a contemporary and appropriate fashion. In addition, he emphasised, the Requiem is also a non-military tribute paid to all those who lost their lives during World War II as well as during the various peace missions carried out by the Dutch armed forces. He also mentioned that a recent survey shows that very few people are still familiar with the events of World War II, making it all the more clear that such commemorations are necessary.
Director J. Floore of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra then told the audience about Verdi’s Requiem and its creation and added that this performance also marked the 125th anniversary of the LSO.
The performance of the Requiem was directed by Enrico Delamboye, with the cooperation of the Vocal Collective from Antwerp. The soloists were: Barbara Haveman (soprano), Ewa Wolak (mezzo-soprano), Marius Brenciu (tenor) and Felipe Bou Jiminez (base).
During the reception in the town hall, the provincial governor Leon Frissen as well as Mayor Harrie van Beers discussed the significance of the Margraten Requiem.
